9th Story Podcast

The other week I was interviewed by the folks at the 9th Story Podcast about atmosphere in fiction. Check out the interview below:

The Sermon For The Dead

Following on from my previous article for Spooky Isles, St. Mark’s Eve , I present a follow up article on the theme of the souls of the living leaving their bodies and other ghostly omens of death:

There are so many people involved in the production of these podcasts – producers, narrators, composers and artists – that my role was really just one small part of a team effort. So I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate each and every person involved in these podcasts.  Well done, folks!

St. Mark’s Eve On The Spooky Isles

My latest Article for The Spooky Isles looks at the strange traditions associated with St. Mark’s Eve. It certainly gives Halloween a run for its money!

My Writing Life

My poor blog has been sadly neglected of late. As those of you who regularly read my updates probably know, back in May I was coming to the end of the final year of my Open University degree. Because the results of my final year were vital to my classification I decided to put the bulk of my focus into that. So, that’s why you didn’t see much of me over those busy months. After the final assignment there was the  (seemingly) endless wait for the results.

Finally, last week this rather attractive piece of paper was delivered:

Taa Daa!

After the results were finally in I had a “What do I do now?” moment. Did I decide to read a book, do some blogging, write a bestseller (I can dream)?

No, I went and signed up for the M. A. in Creative Writing. This was shortly followed by cries of “What have I done?”

On Saturday my M. A. began, funnily enough, on the same day my B. A. certificate arrived.

So far so good but I reserve the right to become hysterical come assignment time.

I found it surprisingly hard to get back to writing after having some time away.  I must confess, this morning I was feeling a bit down in the dumps about my writing future. BUT THEN…

My phone lit up. It was a message from Daniel Foytik over at The Wicked Library and The Lift informing me that I had made this year’s Parsec Award Finals, not once but twice! Yes, I have two stories, The Lost Library – from The Lift and Shadows – from The Wicked Library in the finals of the “Best Speculative Fiction Story: Small Cast (Short Form)” category.

The Wicked Library has also made the finals in the “Best Speculative Fiction Magazine or Anthology Podcast” category. I wish them the best of luck. They have always been very supportive of myself and the other writers.

So that cheered me up a bit!
